The first community meeting on 3/3/2008 was a public presentation by the City consultants and staff. Over 60 residents attended.

The 2nd public meeting took place at John Muir Elementary School on 4/23/08 . Three proposals were presented and public feedback provided from about 30 residents

Hotchkiss Park. is comprised of 2.1 acres of gently sloping land along Fourth Street between Strand Street and Hollister Avenue. The park is dedicated to passive recreational use, consisting primarily of open turf traversed by a central pathway. The park is largely open with mature trees along each edge.

Hotchkiss Park is the setting of the public sculpture “Oneness.”

Originally, it was the site of the Mooney Mansion which burned down in 1904. When the City acquired the Hotchkiss property in 1935, it was the site of an abandoned gas station and several dilapidated buildings. The property was donated to the city by Mary Green Mooney Hotchkiss Jauch.

Fifth and Hollister. This 3 acre city recreation park is the former site of John Adams Junior High School, which was built in 1913 and abandoned after the 1933 earthquake when the new junior high school was built at 16th and Pearl. The land was leased to the city for park purposes in 1949 after having been used by the Army as a recreation center and by the Navy as a training site. It was for many years the location of the Morgan Theatre, which occupied the former Army recreation hall as a community theater until it was destroyed by fire in 1966.

633 Kensington Road
Formerly known as Kensington Park. A 2.5acre park built on the former Walter G. McGinley estate that was purchased by the city in 1958 with funds donated by Marcellus Joslyn. The walls, wrought-iron fence, and major trees are part of the original McGinley estate. Located at the top of a ridge line with an eastern facing side slope which affords vistas over the City. The park includes turf areas along the slope face and one basket ball court, children’s play area and a community center at the top of the hill. There is a dog run along the northern edge of the park.

The 1982 Arthur Mortimer 3 panel mural at the Kensington Road entry depicts (i) a bath house and ocean front in 1906, (ii) the boardwalk between Venice and Ocean Park in 1912, and (iii) Pier Avenue in 1904.
